7 Easy and Affordable Costumes for Your Adorable Pregnant Belly

So you’ve been a little busy — you know, growing a human — and before you know it, the costume party (or trick-or-treating with kids who insist you dress up too) is TOMORROW! What’s a busy, impregnated ghoul to do?

Read on for 7 bump-worthy costumes that you can throw together in 20 minutes (with things you probably already have lying around the house!)

1. Do you wanna build a snowman…costume?

1. Snowman - Emma Rose Benne.jpg

Supplies:

  • White clothes

  • Black and orange fabric or paper

  • Scarf

How to:

  1. Cut a carrot shape out of the orange fabric/paper

  2. Cut three large circles (buttons), 2 medium circles (eyes) and 5 small circles (smile) out of the black fabric/paper

  3. Attach (glue, sew, or pin) the fabric/paper to your white clothes placing the snowman’s face on the chest of your shirt, and the buttons on the belly of the shirt

  4. Tie a scarf just above your belly

Kick it up a notch:

Wear a top hat and chomp on a carrot. If you have other children, dress them up as snowflakes!

2. Show everyone how swimmingly your pregnancy is going with a fishbowl costume.

Supplies:

  • Blue shirt or tank top

  • Black shirt and skirt or pants (can substitute a different color)

  • Yellow and white construction paper or fabric

How to:

  1. Cut a fish shape out of the yellow paper or fabric

  2. Cut small circles out of the white paper or fabric (these will be the bubbles)

  3. Attach (glue, sew, or pin) fish and bubbles to your blue shirt

  4. Tuck blue shirt into pants/skirt

  5. Put black shirt on top of blue one and roll it up so your fish-bowl sticks out

Kick it up a notch:

Add cat ears, a tail, and drawn-on-whiskers to be the hunter and the prey all in one costume!

3 - When you’re so crafty you make people, dress your bump as a ball of yarn

3. Yarn - Emma Rose Benne.jpg

Supplies:

  • Whatever you feel like wearing

  • A bunch of yarn

How to:

  1. Get dressed

  2. Wind the yarn around your belly (not to tight!). The more yarn the better.

Kick it up a notch:

Stick some large knitting needles through the yarn. Or dress up as a cat, as suggested for the fishbowl look.

4. Use some “spare” clothes to turn your bump into a bowling ball.

4. bowling ball option 1 - Emma Rose Benne.jpg

Supplies:

  • Black shirt or tank top

  • White shirt

  • White pants or skirt

  • Red ribbon

  • White fabric (an old t-shirt you don’t mind cutting up works well!) or paper

How to:

  1. Make the bowling ball finger holes by cutting three circles from the white fabric/paper and attaching them (sew, glue, or safety pin) to the belly of the black shirt in a triangle shape.

  2. Tuck the black shirt into your pants or skirt.

  3. Put the white shirt on top and roll it up over your belly so the black shirt sticks out.

  4. Tie two red ribbons around your neck, tying in the back.

Kick it up a notch:

Dress the whole family as bowling pins, and suddenly your baby-to-be is the bowling ball rushing toward you, about to turn your family up-side-down! (Who knew a bowling ball costume could be so deep?)

5. Silence the Trolls who think Halloween is just for kids in this troll doll costume.

5. troll - Emma Rose Benne.jpg

Supplies:

  • Nude-colored clothes

  • Something sparkly (brooch, craft gem, square of sparkly fabric, shiny body sticker, etc.)

  • Plastic water (or soda) bottle

  • Hair-tie

How to:

  1. Get dressed in all nude fabric

  2. Attach the colored gem or square of sparkly fabric to your shirt about where your belly button is (or if you’re sporting crop top or bralette, directly to your belly using body-safe adhesive)

  3. Place the water bottle on top of your head and draw your hair up on all sides around the bottle. Secure with a hair-tie.

Kick it up a notch:

Use temporary hair dye or a wig to achieve neon troll hair, or have your partner dress up as a social media post for you to “troll.”

6. Hop into a Kangaroo costume!

6. Kangaroo - Emma Rose Benne.jpg

Supplies:

  • Brown or tan clothes

  • Stretchy fabric that matches your shirt (could use a stretchy skirt/top, or buy a little fabric)

  • Stuffed animal/s

How to:

  1. Get dressed

  2. Wrap the stretchy fabric around your belly and pin, sew, or tie in the back

  3. Place stuffed animal/s (preferably a kangaroo, but almost anything will work) in your “pouch”

Kick it up a notch:

Add ears and a tail to top off the look

7. Your baby is a gift, so dress your bump as a present

7. giftwrap - Emma Rose Benne.jpg

Supplies:

  • Whatever clothes you feel like wearing

  • A ribbon

  • Cardstock and a marker

How to:

  1. Make a giant gift tag out of the cardstock and marker (or design one on the computer and print it on cardstock). Try “Happy Birth Day!” or “Do not open until *your due date/ due month*!” for a clever baby-themed gift tag. Cut a hole in the gift card so you can attach it to the ribbon.

  2. Tie ribbon around your belly, attach the gift tag, and finish the ribbon with a bow

Kick it up a notch:
