Taking care of curly hair is HARD. The best of times feel like a happy accident, and most of the time it feels like a science experiment. And it seems like just when you think you have it figured out, it changes!

I have been dealing with curly hair my entire life, but in more recent years I have gone from “what is happening” to actually liking my hair 95% of the time. So I’m going to let you in on my not-so-secret holy grail products. These are really general, and will be helpful for all categories of curly hair.

1. DevaCurl microfiber towel

Some people will tell you that any microfiber towel will do. Those people would be wrong.

2. Conditioner, conditioner, conditioner.

Did I mention conditioner? Curly hair needs lots of moisture. It’s not so much about which specific conditioner as much as finding one that works for you. But if you need specific names, Sally’s GVP Conditioning Balm is great for thick hair, and Kinky Curly Knot Today Conditioner is great for most hair types.

3. Invisibobbles

Have you ever put your hair up to get it out of your face, but when the time came to take it down you were left with a disaster because you couldn't get the hair tie untangled? Ugh. These handy little things allow you to put your hair up without the tangles.

4. Silk or satin pillowcase.

Trying to preserve your curls overnight so they don’t look like a crazy hot mess in the morning is near-impossible. Sleeping on a satin pillowcase helps. I like to keep an extra on hand and even take it when I travel.

5. A diffuser.

Curly hair doesn’t like heat, but for some people it's unavoidable, especially during the winter. Blow drying it will just leave you with a frizzy disaster. A diffuser attachment for your blow dryer will save your curls! Some blow dryers even come with them now.

Living with curly hair doesn’t have to be a nightmare. With the right tools it can be manageable and even enjoyable! Okay, maybe that’s a stretch. But at least you can enjoy the compliments.
